Who I Am…

Let’s face it, many of us have choked over the question, “…so, what do YOU do?”

I know I have said more times then I care to count, ” I USED to be a teacher, but now I just stay at home.”  I am tired of looking at the degrees on my wall and thinking I am missing something out there in career land.  I have a career, it is my husband, my children and my home.  I have decided to start a blog to record my thoughts, encourage other moms, share ideas and recipes and review books that will educate and inform us as we try to become the version of ourselves that God designed us to be 🙂

I have been married for 5 years to my best friend Aaron, have two beautiful little girls, Rebecca and McKayla and have struggled through the loss of both my parents in the last 6 years.  I taught Elementary School for 4 years and look forward to using the education in my first career to help direct me in my second…and who knows?  Maybe one day the two shall merge and I will find myself a proud homeschooler!

Hello Emily! Well done!! I think starting this blog is an excellent way of conveying the fact that raising a family and being at home to do so is a full time “job” in itself. Though I am not a mother, I find that many of my girlfriends who are mothers say the same thing you did: “I’m just a stay at home mom”. The word “just” has such a negative connation to it when used in this context. What is so negative about raising children, being there to see every milestone – big and small – to see their excitement when discovering the world around them, to see them become something greater than ourselves? Raising children should not be viewed as a negative endevour. After all, it IS the most important “job”!

    Best wishes Emily!

Thank you Rena, for your glowing encouragement! You are so right, it is amazing to watch all the milestone moments in a child’s life! You have the perfect attitude that will serve you well if/when you decide it is time for a “career change!”

I love your blog, Emily! The legitimate and vital role of motherhood is a timely issue for our generation. When one considers that the most common alternative is paying a stranger to raise one’s children, why wouldn’t everyone esteem being a stay-at-home mom as a worthy ‘career’?
I’m persuaded that your nurturing presence will benefit your daughters’ sense of stability and value system, and that this positive impact will carry on into the next generation as your daughters reflect your legacy.

Love your blog. I will be a follower. I think you have made a great choice to stay home and raise your family. My nieces both are stay home moms , one a teacher, the other an ICU RN, they are also Highland dance instructors, and continue to teach dancing on weekday evenings, when their husbands are home with the children. The niece who is a nurse also home schools, and the children are so advanced in their studies, it is amazing the Maths they can do.
